We welcome inquirers to contact us for further information on the LSBMD Rescue program.
We have Bernese Mountain Dogs available for adoption on occasion. Availability of adoptable Bernese Mountain Dog companions is variable - sometimes we have several dogs that are looking for forever homes; sometimes there are no rescue dogs available. When (time of year) rescue dogs come into our program is not predictable; neither is the age, sex, or physical condition of the dogs.
- today there may be no dogs available - but tomorrow is another day - check our site often for the latest news on rescue -
QUESTION: Does LSBMDR have adoptable dogs available now?
ANSWER: When dogs are available for adoption through the LSBMD rescue program, we post their pictures in our Gallery. Please visit the club's photo gallery at http://www.lonestarbmd.org/gallery2/main.php to see if we have any rescued Berners available. Look at the gallery album labeled as "Album: Available rescues". If the "Album: Available rescues" is empty, there are no rescue dogs currently available. If there are rescued Berners in need of forever homes, you can see their pictures. If you think you'd be interested in pursuing adoption after looking at a picture that has been posted, then contact Dawn to obtain more in depth information on the rescued dog.
QUESTION: Can I get on a list to adopt a rescued dog?
ANSWER: Even if we have no rescue dogs currently available and you want to adopt a rescued Berner, we hope you'll let us know. We want to hear from you if you have a place in your home and heart to offer a rescued Berner a home. Contact LSBMDR using the phone or email address shown above. You can also download and fill out the Rescue Adoption Application. After filling in the Adoption Application, mail it to the address provided on the form.
Thanks,
Dawn Letry

Lone Star Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue General Information - FAQ's
QUESTION: What if I have a dog to surrender?
ANSWER: Call Dawn Letry at 817-430-2469 if you have a dog that you need to surrender. This number is for surrenders and for reporting dogs in shelters/pounds only.
QUESTION: How many dogs do you place a year?
ANSWER: On average, we only place about 5 - 12 dogs a year. That's why rescued dogs are available at some times and not at other times.
QUESTION: Do you place BMD's in my state?
ANSWER: The LSBMDR,Inc has placed dogs in Texas. The club actively searches for dogs in our region of responsibility that includes the states of Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. If you do not live in one of these four states, you may still fill out a rescue application but the likelihood of receiving a LSBMDR dog is extremely remote. Instead, you should contact a club closer to you. See a list of other BMD clubs at www.bmdca.org.
QUESTION: Berners cost too much from breeders; can I get one cheaper through rescue?
ANSWER: Our adoption fees are used to cover costs and can vary, but they are generally less than the price of a dog from a breeder. The dog may be examined by a vet if necessary, all shots will be brought up to date, and we will spay/neuter if not already done. Any detected or suspected health problems will be checked out and treated if possible.
QUESTION: How long is your waiting list?
ANSWER: We keep a list of potential adopters. The dogs are not placed on a first-come, first-served basis, but rather as a best match to an adoptive home that will be the best place for the dog. We have lots of potential adopters and with so few dogs a year, the wait can be long.
QUESTION: How long do you keep my adoption application active?
ANSWER: Please update your information every six months. After that, we will be less likely to contact you with a potential adoption.
QUESTION: Can I get a puppy through rescue?
ANSWER: It is somewhat unlikely. Our youngest placement was six months old - but typically the average age of rescued dogs is 3 - 6 years old.
QUESTION: Where do your rescue Berners come from?
ANSWER: Pounds, shelter, surrenders directly to us by the owners, even just plain lost or abandoned.
QUESTION: Can I use this dog for breeding?
ANSWER: No. All Berners placed through the LSBMDR rescue program are spayed or neutered prior to release to the adoptive home.
QUESTION: Is there a guarantee?
ANSWER: Sorry, no. We collect whatever information on the dog that we can and pass all of it on to the potential adopters so that they can make an informed decision. But no one can foretell the future. If the adoption does not work out, you are required to surrender the dog back to the BMDCR rescue program.
QUESTION: I've heard that Berners are one-person dogs. How well do they adjust to their new owners?
ANSWER: Surprisingly well. Even ones from good homes that were surrendered to us have re-attached to their new families. It takes love and patience for all of them to overcome whatever baggage they have. So far, they have all done well.
QUESTION: Do your rescue dogs ever come with AKC registration papers?
ANSWER: Sometimes we get papers on surrendered Berners and gladly pass them on to adopters. It is helpful for health history. If the new owner wants to participate in AKC events, they can apply for an ILP number for the dog. The dog is then allowed to join in all AKC events other than Conformation like any registered dog.
QUESTION: Do you ever place Bernese mixes?
ANSWER: The LSBMDR group only places pure bred Bernese Mountain Dogs. However, we keep a list of potential homes that would also consider a BMD mix and if we locate a mix, we notify those homes of the dog's location and they may adopt the mix directly from the current owner or shelter. You may indicate your interest in a mix on the application.
QUESTION: I want to get on your adopter list, what do I do now?
ANSWER: You can fill out an Adoption Application.
